AutoExec Summary
Toyota and Subaru, in collaboration with Mazda, have developed state-of-the-art combustion engines for their next-generation hybrid technology. Toyota has created three new engines, including a pair of 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrols and a 2.0-litre turbo, all designed to be more powerful and efficient than their predecessors. Subaru has reinvented its horizontally-opposed ‘boxer’ engine to serve as a generator and drive unit in a series-parallel hybrid powertrain. The new engines are expected to be between 10-20 per cent smaller in volume compared to the current set-up and will run on petrol, synthetic fuel, biodiesel, and hydrogen. The new powertrain could be introduced as soon as next year under the bonnet of the facelifted 2025 Crosstrek.
